Shiraz's major stomach operation

Shiraz, our 5 month old Great Dane puppy patient came into the clinic last month to be desexed and have a special surgical procedure called "gastropexy". Gastropexy is the surgical attachment of the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent its ability to twist on itself if the stomach does fill with air or food. This surgical procedure is recommended specifically for prevention of a common medical/ surgical emergency known as "bloat" or Gastric Dilatation and Volvolus (GDV) in deep chested dogs (such as Great Danes, German Shepherd, Irish Wolfhands).

Tis' the season for grass seeds!

Grass seedGrass seedBruno, a lively young Maltese cross boy, came to see us last month when his Aunty saw him licking one of his paws excessively. It started immediately after his walk in the morning. Our veterinarian Cathy examined Bruno and found an entry point with a small lump-like pocket of pus surrounding it.

Mia's sugar problem

Mia is a lovely little Maltese Terrier who visited the clinic a few weeks ago because she was drinking more than usual and was also urinating in her bed. She had lost quite a lot of weight too, despite eating her usual meals. A urine sample was taken from Mia and the results indicated that she had a urinary tract infection and had a lot of glucose (sugar) in her urine. A simple blood test done that same day confirmed that Mia had diabetes mellitus.

Ellie's ultrasound

Ellie is a lovely schnauzer who spent a day in the clinic with us so she could have an ultrasound. Ellie had a tumour removed from her back leg last year and her pre anaesthetic blood samples showed some abnormalities. We tested her blood again a month later and, as the changes were still evident, an ultrasound of Ellie's abdomen was required to investigate the problem.

Cherry-eyed Chi Cha

In December, Chi Cha was presented to our clinic with a lump protruding from her lower eyelid. The lump is known as a "cherry eye" as it certainly looks like a cherry poking out from beneath the lid. Actually, the "cherry" is a part of the third eyelid that had prolapsed out. Dogs and cats have an extra eyelid to help wipe their eyes' surfaces.

Floyd's private problem

Floyd is a 3 year old Heeler cross, who was presented to us with a nasty lump in a very private place, being his scrotum. Floyd was initially treated with antibiotics but the lump started to grow. It was elected that the best treatment would be to desex Floyd.

Oliver, the little old dog with a big heart

Oliver is a 10 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, whose mum noticed that he had started coughing quite a bit recently. His vaccinations were all up to date so at his regular six-month senior check up, his mum mentioned the coughing problem to our veterinarian. Our veterinarian examined Oliver and found nothing abnormal so we decided to take some x-rays of Oliver's chest. The x-rays showed that Oliver had a rather large heart, which contributed to his breathing difficulties and coughing. We gave Oliver some medications to help him breath easier.
